What is EPS

What is expanded polystyrene?

A closed-cell, lightweight, rigid foam plastic, also commonly known as Styrofoam or thermocol.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is composed of carbon and hydrogen molecules, derived from petroleum and natural gas by-products.

Moulded EPS is non-toxic, and no chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are used in its production. It is environmentally friendly: thanks to its strength and excellent insulation value, less material is needed, and less energy is used in manufacturing compared with alternative materials. EPS does not support microbiological growth.

Its low thermal conductivity, high compressive strength and excellent shock absorption make EPS ideal for insulating concrete forming systems. It is also the material commonly found in protective cushion pads for computers and other electronic equipment.

Advantages of EPS

Environmental safety

EPS has no nutritional value to support fungal, bacteriological or animal growth, which makes it ideal for food packaging. It is non-toxic and inert, and contains no CFCs or HCFCs.

Lightweight

EPS is made of 98% air, making it one of the lightest packaging materials. It adds very little to the weight of the packaging.

Recyclable

Expanded polystyrene is 100% recyclable and reusable.

Insulation capacity

The thermal insulating properties of EPS help keep food fresh and prevent condensation throughout the distribution chain.

Durable

Its cellular structure makes EPS dimensionally stable, so it does not deteriorate with age and is reliable protective packaging for a wide range of goods.

Mechanical strength

Flexible production makes EPS versatile in strength. High compressive strength grades are used for heavy load-bearing applications, lower grades for void forming.

Versatility

EPS can be made in a wider range of shapes and sizes than other materials, and is compatible with cement, concrete, brick, masonry, mortars and plaster. Custom shapes reduce packaging, saving space, distribution and damaged-goods costs.

Ease of transport and installation

Because it is lightweight, EPS is easy to transport and saves fuel. It is easy to handle, store and install, and requires no protective clothing.
